FULL GOLOWAN PROGRAMME

Hello and welcome to Golowan 2008!!

It’s hard to know who to thank most for the success of Golowan 2007 – the performers, the children, the wonderful army of volunteers, the Town Council and its officers, the crowds of people who enjoyed it with us, or the Lord of the Weather, who allowed it to rain everywhere else but threw a protective bubble over Penzance for the whole day. Please, all of you (especially the last one) come and repeat the experience this year! But heartfelt thanks to everyone. It only happened because you wanted it to, a real community effort.

The Golowan organisation has been consolidating and now has a home, a telephone number or two, and just one web-site (details overleaf). It is still re-inventing itself, and needs all the support it can get. This could be in the shape of money, a standing order, sponsorship, practical assistance, or just your welcome presence at as many of the events as you’d like to attend.

We’ve done our best once again to combine old favourites with some innovations. Two new community projects are joining Golowan this year, the Sing Up Youth Choir which will perform in Chapel Street Methodist Chapel on Wednesday 25 th, and the Many-A-Link Circus project of young performers from all Penwith’s secondary schools. The circus will be coming to town, and to celebrate we’ll be using a new venue, the Festival Square – better known during the rest of the year as the Greenmarket (or Union Street) Car Park. On Mazey Day the circus rig and stage will transform the square into a magical performance space, tucked away from the passing processions, for the circus and a host of other shows from 11.00 onwards.

There’s more - for example the highly prestigious South West Sinfonietta who will entertain those who don’t want to bop in the Marquee on Mazey night – the Buskers’ Festival which we’ll be hosting on Newlyn Green on Quay Fair Day – the Cornish Wrestling Championships in another new venue, Mann’s Field (next to the Boating Pool) on the same day – and especially for the kids a Treasure Trail on Sunday 22 nd and the very first Mock Mayor’s Picnic in Morrab Gardens the day before. Be sure of a big surprise.

To celebrate 25 years of Twinning with our Breton cousins in Concarneau we’ll be welcoming a Bagad (band), dancers and a civic party to join us over the big weekend. As a preview we’re also pleased to welcome the Georgian Male Voice Choir ‘Mtiebi’ on Wednesday 18 th . As for the rest, read on the see an amazingly full and varied programme of talent, home-grown and otherwise, culminating in climax of Mazey Day, the whole crazy glorious mixture that makes Golowan so special year after year. Or for the nautically-minded the chance to create the vessel of your dreams, ready to sail into action on the waters of Wherrytown Boating Pool on Quay Fair Day. Or a kite. A special pre-Golowan event to take advantage of the tour by the Georgian Male Voice Choir Mtiebi ( in association with Audio Voice, Singing Out West, and Carn To Cove). The strength and fiery polyphonic harmonies of Eastern European choral music are already well known and loved in Penzance. Georgia is situated on the ancient Silk Road to the far east, and its traditions are a fusion of east, west and something peculiarly its own. Please welcome and enjoy these visitors from the heart of the Caucasian mountains, here for the first time.

By special invitation of our Mock Mayor , The Worshipful Fi Read, the younger children of Penzance and district are welcome to join her around the bandstand in Morrab Gardens for a picnic. Bring some food and drink, and a grown-up – ice cream, teas and cakes are available on the day. There’ll be face-painting, badge-making, fun, games and frolics. Squashbox Puppet Theatre will be there at midday , and there’ll be music from:

“The Tin Violin” – An Acorn Arts and Bishbashbosh Production

“The Tin Violin” is a dramatic telling of the amazing story of Joseph Emidy, born in 1775, captured as a child in his native Guinea to be sold as a slave in Portugal, captured again by the British Navy in which he served during the French wars, and eventually released in Falmouth. Already a proficient self-taught violinist he was presented with a tin violin by a miner, and rose to be a concert musician, composer, and pillar of Cornish society.

Sunday 22 nd June

Morning – Civic Parade and Church Service – St John’s Hall – 10.30

One of Golowan’s quieter pleasures, a parade through the peaceful Sunday morning streets with the Mayor and other local dignitaries accompanied by Penzance Silver Band, to St John’s Church to dedicate and bless this year’s festival. The service will be as usual in Cornish and English with music by Penzance Youth Wind Band, Newlyn Male Voice Choir and a newly-formed Sing Up children’s choir

Afternoon – Golowan Treasure Trail – Humphry Davy Statue – 2.00

How well do you know Penzance? Surprise yourself with the fiendish Golowan Treasure Trail. Questionnaires are £2 a sheet – all proceeds to Golowan funds – and there will be great prizes for the winners. Finish at St John’s Hall.

Evening – ‘Tongue Pie’ – Acorn Arts Centre – 8.00 - £5.00

One of Golowan’s grand traditions, an evening of story-telling, this year on the theme of ‘Celtic Connections’. Story-tellers young and old will take you on journeys of the imagination where – like the radio – the pictures we create in our heads are the best of all. New voices are welcome as well as old favourites so if you would like to take part we’d be happy to hear from you. Once again we will be presenting prizes kindly donated by Books Plus to the winners of the secondary schools’ story-telling competitions.

Few people are closer to the heart of our community than a Methodist Minister. Through joy and tragedy we rely on them to find the right words and help us through the main stations on our journey through life. It’s an odd job, and Julyan Drew knows it well, a local man amongst local people who is also Chaplain to Penzance Town Council, the Fire Brigade and Penlee Lifeboat, leavening the serious side of his ministry with some of the worst jokes you’ll ever hear.... Don’t miss this one.

Sue Hill – The Beautiful Journey

There couldn’t be a more appropriate speaker at Golowan than Sue Hill. One of the many creative projects she has undertaken was at Alverton School back in 1990 which led to the very first Mazey Day. Together with partner Bill Mitchell she has been a key figure in Kneehigh Theatre from its beginnings, and since 2005 has been creative director of WildWorks, who produce spectacular theatre in open-air sites, including “An Old Man With Enormous Wings” at Hayle, and last year’s “Souterrain” at Redruth.

“The Beautiful Journey” is a good description of their past but also the name of their latest ongoing project. Prepare for a magic afternoon.

Evening –“ Thunder & Lightning” – Acorn Arts Centre – 8.00 - £6.00

Thunder & Lightning is of course a cream split with treacle, but which goes on top of which? If we can’t agree about that it shows that the spirit of Cornwall is still alive and well, and where better to experience it than in the Acorn in the company of Randle Hurley and his merry band, including the inimitable Liz Harman, John Harry, and the harmonious Buccas Four who will deliver a proper-job evening of local lore, humour and music.

Penzance Youth Wind Band/ Penzance Youth String Orchestra

Among the highlights of last winter’s “Montol” festival were performances by these two exceptional ensembles. After only a couple of years the String Orchestra has achieved outstanding musical quality. Tonight under the direction of Tim Boulton their programme will include J S Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto, C P E Bach’s Symphony in C, and Purcell’s ‘Chaconny’.

After returning from a tour of America the Youth Wind Band’s already high standards seem to have gone up to another level. We combine them here for the first time for an evening of variety and excellence with something for everyone.

A38 Films, in the person of producer Mick Catmull, presents the first showing of his new documentary on the work of artist Kurt Jackson, to be introduced by the artist himself, together with other films on local themes including “Joan” the prize-winning story of a smallholder in West Penwith, plus “Cape Slip” and “Cornwall Eclipsed”, stories of Cornwall in transition. Kurt is highly acclaimed well beyond the Tamar and we are excited to welcome him to Golowan for what should be a popular and stimulating evening.

Alison Bevan – “The shock of the New...Lyn School!”

Brian Sewell may have described the Newyn School of painting as a ‘lot of whiskery old fishermen’, but in reality the Newlyn movement was as revolutionary in its day as any other shocking artistic innovation. Alison Bevan, director of Penlee House, describes for us with love and expertise the impact these now familiar works had when first shown. Sadly we don’t expect Mr Sewell to be there –he might even have changed his mind...

Sing Up - Penwith Schools Community Choirs

A major project has been in preparation at Penwith Music Centre at Humphry Davy School for the last few months, creating five new community choirs of schoolchildren from the Penwith area and teaching them songs from around the world. The schools involved are Gulval, Ludgvan, St Mary’s C of E, St Mary’s RC, St Hilary, Marazion and Humphry Davy. Golowan is always proud to be associated with school projects and we look forward to this, the first concert by the massed Sing Up Choirs in the splendid surroundings of Chapel Street Chapel.

A close-up and noisy evening of exciting bands in the best tradition of the Acorn, featuring local goodtime ska band Foghorn Leghorn, and, from Teignmouth (Like Muse – but nothing like them) fast-rising melodic indie band gigging in advance of their first album, The Quails (check them on MySpace). And in between, last year’s most inspired reunion, Penzance’s finest, The Surgeons. Get sweaty...

Evening – Folk Club – Admiral Benbow – 8.00 - £4.00 (on the door)

Penzance’s first folk club in many years has been running successfully this winter in the Admiral Benbow under the direction of Alan & Linda Collins. For Golowan they present a special session with super Cornish duo Leski (Fiddle,hammered dulcimer, whistle, vocals) supported by singer and guitarist Steve Hunt from Dalla.

Colin Rogers – A Life In Pictures

A glance at the credits of any decent TV programme might show the name of Colin Rogers as writer, executive producer or director, for example his BBC production of John le Carre’s “A Perfect Spy” which was aired again recently. He has held senior management positions in the BBC and ITV, runs his own film production company and in the past 5 years worked abroad for the BBC World Service Trust to deliver AIDS-related TV drama projects in India and Nigeria. His incredibly full life includes being Vice-Chair of our NHS Primary Care Trust, board member of the Cornwall Film Festival which he helped to found and, not least, Trustee of the Acorn Arts Centre, although he is possibly most content when walking his dog on the cliffs around his home in Porthgwarra. Come and share this remarkable ‘life in pictures’.

Presented by O-Region Screening Network this year’s film night will be something special, a ‘Roughcut’ evening with new and emerging directors, screenings (including the brilliant and hilarious Cornish language film ‘An Jowl In Agas Kegin’ – ‘The Devil in Your Kitchen’), interactive sessions, bands, DJs and food – the place to swagger and be seen! Other films include: “Another Horizon” by Mark Jenkin, Brett Harvey’s new ‘horror flick’ “Bandages”, the first showing of “The Allotment” by Ed Sayers, and – close to our hearts – “A Day In The Life Of The Mock Mayor of Penzance” by Barbara Santi.

Last year’s ceilidh was such a success that it has been repeated at regular intervals all winter. In the generous surroundings of PZ Gallery (Formerly Space, or for old Penzance folks, Taylor’s Garage) there’ll be plenty of room for music and dancing, with the Newlyn Reelers, the Golowan Band, special guests, bar, and dances everyone can try. This year’s Marquee season opens with Kabasa, a newly-formed combo of talented like-minded local musicians with a liking for Latin/ Afro-Cuban sounds – think Buena Vista Social Club – and an evening of warm mellow swing, ideal for dancing. Plus support.

John The Fish

Although self-effacing, John (The Fish) Langford has had an extraordinary life. He has been a Royal Marine, a fisherman, folk-singer, broadcaster, clog-dancer, and now as a member of the British Humanist Association officiates at Humanist weddings, baby naming ceremonies and funerals, as well as promoting peace and non-violent change. Well-known to Penzance audiences through his folk-club work and partnership with Brenda Wootton, it’s a pleasure to have him back.

Evening – Golowan Cabaret – Acorn Arts Centre – 7.30 - £7.00

A classy sit-down evening in the Acorn with a variety of amazing acts, including Djazz Celtica, brilliant pyrotechnic folk/ jazz in Django Reinhart style with influences from classical, Eastern European and Irish folk music; and high-flying soulful singer/songwriter/guitarist Sarah McQuaid, whose album “When Two Lovers Meet” has enjoyed rave reviews .

Evening – Rosie & The Goldbug – Festival Marquee – 8.00 - £6.00

Probably the hottest band in Cornwall at the moment, Rosie & The Goldbug have been tearing up venues with their high-energy high-speed passionate music, and are ready for lift-off to conquer the rest of the country. With influences ranging from Siouxsie and the Banshees to Kate Bush, The Cure to Fleetwood Mac, expect a full-on sound with drama and melody too, a real sonic thrash. With support Hedluv, probably Redruth’s finest (and funniest) rapper, another unique Cornish talent. Come early.

An event as old as the Feast of John itself, the election of the Worshipful Mock Mayor of the Quay for 2008/2009. Who will stand in the footsteps of David White, Helga the Hormonal, Eddie The Snake, Testicular Tony, Fi from Pondlife, and (the late) Tom Robinson’s Dog? This year we’re looking for contestants put forward by your pub/club/team/best mate/ or just yourself, so get in touch with the Golowan office and let’s hear about you. It could be you addressing the crowds on Mazey Morning...

Not Forgetting – the draw of the Grand Mock Mayor Competition!

(N.B. the only certain way of attending the Mock Mayor Election is by buying a ticket for the whole evening, but as some of the audience leave after Rosie’s gig we’ll be selling tickets on the door at £3 each, first come first served)

Following the Mock Mayor Election, by courtesy of Penzance Town Council, Fantastic Fireworks will fill the sky over the Jubilee Pool with ‘Summer Fire’, the magnificent display enjoyed by thousands as the fabulous colours and shapes are reflected in the dark waters of the bay

As the last fireworks fade away listen for the sound of drums and watch out for the Golowan Band as they lead off the first, and often wildest Serpent Dance of the weekend, accompanying Penzance’s own magical midsummer pagan ‘Oss, Penglaz, in a riotous celebration. Dance til you drop.

And then get some sleep because tomorrow is Mazey Day....

Sat June 28 th MAZEY DAY

Mazey Day dawns and takes Penzance to another planet, a whole day of colour, sound, spectacle and celebration. The traffic is given the day off and the streets are filled with flags, greenery, banners, and the widest variety of street stalls to be seen in Cornwall. The stage is set for the main events, the fantastic Mardi-Gras-like processions which snake through the shopping streets throughout the day, full of children from a dozen or more local primary schools carrying huge images created with the help of local artists, fantasy creations in all kinds of materials, interspersed with bands, dancers and circus performers of every description. It’s a scene which has made Golowan - and Penzance - famous.

But on Mazey Day there’s so much more. Away from the processions there are performers, singers, dancers, jugglers, choirs, bands at almost every corner, each one a little festival of its own. And this year for the first time the car-park at the rear of the Greenmarket (see map) will be transformed for one day into the Festival Square! There Many-A-Link Circus, a project created in local secondary schools, will be demonstrating their skills on the stage and on the trapeze! Between their performances the Square will host a full programme of other events – see below – as well as the playbus and parents-with-children area.

Off the streets there are other worlds to sample, from the calm atmosphere of Morrab Gardens where you can dance the Tango on the bandstand, to the cutting-edge scene in the Festival Marquee where Kernow Rocks will showcase the best of local young bands getting their first chance on the big stage – many of our best bands started here.

As the afternoon draws on and the streets start to clear the Golowan Band leads the last serpent dance of the day in and out of streets, shops and wherever else their fancy takes them. In the evening there’s a tough choice, between the prestigious South West Sinfonietta who are performing at Golowan for the first time, and the Festival Marquee where you can dance away the summer night to the rolling African sounds of Chimanimani.

Little splinters of the Golowan band take their music to where you live, with a quick tune to remind you that today really is the day.

10.00 – Civic Procession

The only formalities of the day as the Mayor of Penzance, the Chair of Penwith District Council, Mayors of neighbouring communities, Councillors, MPs and MEPs process to the Humphry Davy Statue to the music of the Penzance Silver Band. There the mayor will dedicate the celebrations, followed by a less formal address of welcome from the new Mock Mayor. A procession of the band and dancers of Concarneau will join the proceedings and a short ceremony will commemorate 25 years of Twinning between the two communities.

The first big procession of the day winds its way from St John’s Hall down Market Jew Street and back, with giant imagery from schools accompanied by :

Festival Square (Greenmarket Car Park) – From 11.00

For the first time the Greenmarket car park will be part of the festival’s performance space, transformed for the day by the Many-A-Link Circus. This has been devised from a training project including all five of Penwith’s secondary schools with the collaboration of local companies Swamp Circus, Cirq Ciel and Bash Street Theatre Company, together with Penwith Sports Partnership. Expect clowns, stilt-walkers, acrobats, break-dancers, jugglers and trapeze artists! The focus will be a large performance stage surrounded by flags and bunting, and sharing the stage during the day ( by kind permission of Many-A-Link) will be other local acts including song, dance and drama. The line-up for the day includes:

After the noise and bustle of the day relax in the company of the South West’s premier professional orchestra, playing at Golowan for the first time. Established in 1993 the orchestra under the Presidency of Julian Lloyd Webber, conducted by Tim Boulton, has gone from strength to strength, presenting music ranging from baroque to the 20 th century. The programme features soloists Suzanne Manuell, soprano, and Jacqueline Kershaw, French horn.

Suzanne Manuell has appeared at Covent Garden and the Albert Hall with orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic and the Northern Sinfonia.

Jacqueline Kershaw has worked with English National Opera, The London Sinfonietta and the English Chamber Orchestra Wind Octet.

Dancing feet and alert ears will be delighted to greet Chimanimani, a highly respected five-piece band from Zimbabwe. Led by the joyous vocals of Cecilia Agatha, they explore roots music with hypnotic drums, funky bass and rolling guitar sounds, and thoughtful lyrics too of a country where the human spirit, however beset, still triumphs over the worst adversities. Dance away a summer’s night as the visions of Mazey Day fade into a dream...

29 th June – Quay Fair Day

Following the intensity of Mazey Day, Quay Fair Day is the time to chill. The festival moves down to the seafront, where the Wharf Road is closed and the whole of the harbour area is filled with stalls, food and drink, music and performance. In the harbour classic boats will be gathered, some open to visit (The “Mermaid” will once again be running special trips from the harbour slipway for those who fancy having a look at Penzance from the sea). Inside the Marquee the afternoon sound is mostly acoustic and folky. Straying along the promenade you can go and see the colourful Mazey Boats regatta, watch the Mazey Kites fly, check out the art of Cornish Wrestling, and go on to the Buskers Festival on Newlyn Green, by way of dozens of stalls, musicians and entertainers. In the evening it’s all back to the Marquee for the last time to see Golowan 2008 off with a bang, with the traditional end-of-festival party to the gloriously retro sound of Joey The Lips.

For some the high spot of Golowan, the busy scene around the boating poolas this year’s amazing Mazey Boats prepare for the big launch to do their best, while a fabulous exhibition of model boats surrounds the pool. And across on the beach come and watch the amazing Mazey Kites take to the sky.

One of last year’s innovations was the introduction of traditional Cornish sports. This year the main emphasis will be on Cornish Wrestling, with up to four junior bouts and two senior contests under the stern eyes of the Sticklers, but look out for Sheaf Pitching, the Swingle Tree and who knows what else. Beijing will be an anti-climax after this...

 

Afternoon and evening – Buskers Festival – Bolitho Gardens (Newlyn Green)

Golowan is delighted to host the third annual Buskers Festival presented by Born Hectic Events, with two tented stages, bar, fun-fair and stalls. Contestants have ten minutes each to impress the judges, and the winner will be guaranteed a slot in 2009’s Glastonbury Festival. Come and show what you think. In the evening folk-rock band ‘Black Friday’ will play on the Buskers Festival site. All proceeds will be donated to the Childrens World Charity.

 

Evening – Joey The Lips – Festival Marquee – 8.00 - £8.00 (Golowan volunteers free)

We like to bring the festival to an end with a really stonking party and tonight’s band will send you home on a cloud. Joey The Lips was a character in the film “The Committments” and this Plymouth band are true to the spirit of 60s soul together with some 70s funk for good measure. A 10-piece band with two girl singers and a full fat sound, they will raise the roof of the Marquee and bring Golowan 2008 to a magnificent climax! Don’t miss it...
